Summary: I thought anything cobalt would be superior...
Comment: Before buying this Dewalt Cobalt set, I had been using an inherited set of craftsman bits labeled "the best bits we sell", and that was all I knew about them.
Preparing to do some metal working, I decided I must have a set of cobalt bits. So no sooner than receiving the set, I just happened to need to drill into a table saw stand of 1/8 inch likely hardened steel.
And though it probably shouldn't be done, put the 1/4" bit in my hand drill, pushed up against the leg, pulled the trigger only to have it skate down the side of the work.
Problem here is that though this set has a split point, the angle I believe is only 118 degrees, rather than these craftsman at 135, with a pilot point, which in combination works much much better.
And and after moving to the press, this has proved to be a significant disadvantage for not just at the start of the cut, but the greater angle and pilot point seems to pull the bit through the material with ease.
A much nicer cutting experience.
I imagine if your only doing woods, this may not be noticed as much.
But for the price when here on sale its hard to resist.
If I could have done it again, I would opt for the 14 or 16 pcs sets which have sizes up to 3/8ths.
And it should be noted the cobalt makes the bit more hard, but more brittle as well. Should maybe keep cobalt on the drill press, eventually your bound to have an accident using a hand drill.
