Somat Special Salt is for water softening in dishwashers. Tap water often contains lime. So that lime is not deposited on dishes and the dishwasher, some dishwashers have a water softening unit which withdraws the harmful lime from the water.
Table salt is unsuitable for water softening in dishwashers. It may contain insoluble components affecting the efficiency of the water softening unit.

Customer Rating: Summary: Good for my Miele Comment: We use this salt for our Miele G-894SC dishwasher. We have moderately hard water in Indianapolis and a high mineral content. I fought with our old dishwasher for many years, because our dishes were always cloudy and our glasses had a film. This salt is on the high end of price, (others have mentioned Morton's) but it was recommended by the OEM and I've not had a problem with my dishwasher. The only bother has been lack of availability in our local stores.
Customer Rating: Summary: Somat salt for Fisher & Paykel Dishwasher Comment: Salt is fine, price is not-way too expensive and you can buy Morton Ice Cream Salt which works just as well and costs around $5 instead of $18.00 and is available at grocery stores.
Customer Rating: Summary: A bit pricey, but it works Comment: I suppose you could use a cheaper type of rock salt, but for the amount our Miele dishwasher uses (maybe 1 box every 2 months), I'll stick with the Somat salt. The cleaning quality of the dishwasher is absolutely superb.
