Summary: Where is the CD for Linux?
Comment: The title of this product is "Workstation V6 Win CD." Amazon sells another product called "Workstation V6 Linux CD" which you can see by clicking the "other products by VMware" highlighted phrase at the top. Some reviewer are reporting they get both products in one box, and some report they don't. Seems best to be sure what host operating system you want to use this product on and buy accordingly.

Comment: This is a great product, but this page is slightly confusing. This is a Windows specific version. Although the box you purchase here contains both the windows and Linux versions the serial number provided is specific to Windows. If you are planning on using it with Linux as a host you will need to purchase the Linux version which is not sold by Amazon.

Summary: Just answer the effing question
Comment: These people seem to me to be unwilling, or worse incapable, to answer some very rudimentary questions about whether or not virtualising rendering farms realises performance gains. Doesn't speak to the quality of the product, I do concede - I would however argue that it speaks to the quality of it's technical support.
P.S. in order to 'speak' my mind I had no choice but to rate this product; I gave it two stars because on the one hand I can't pronounce it a catastrophic waste of money, nor can I speak at all well of it for not having given it use. Amazon gives one absolutely no choice in the matter but to assign a rating to something one has sought to acquire some greater technical comprehension of, without issue - i.e. irrespective of whether or not one has tested it for oneself.

Summary: VMWare Workstation
Comment: This is a must have for computer software developers, on my workstation (quad core, 8 gigs of ram, 64 bit Vista) I have the following VMWare guests

* Windows 2003 Server, SQL Server
* linux (debian 4), mysql
* Ubuntu
* Windows XP
* CentOS 5

The ability to create snapshots and rollbacks is very useful, as it running all of these systems as a test environment on one machine.

One of the reasons why I purchased VMWare is that it works with Vista64.

You may want to look at VMWare Server - which is a free product that has the basic similar functionality.
