The pendant is darker in person and the scroll work on the back side isn't really visable when it's worn. Nevertheless, I have gotten several compliments on it (from strangers) which made me realize how pretty and uncommon it is. The chain is very nice, but I spent $5 to have the spring ring clasp changed to a lobster clasp, which was money well spent. Overall, I like it and wear it often!

So, I guess that means it is a nice gift for any age girl/lady. My wife was very impressed with the chain, the charm, and the care instructions that came with it.
