Summary: PhotoScore is good but a but idiosyncratic
Comment: PhotoScore will both scan (if you have a scanner and scanner software), read pdf files for editing or change of key, and read handwritten music.
In order for PhotoScore to do so reliably, it is important for the notes and lines to close resemble the sizes of the staff paper provided for print. Deviating from that invariably will require a great deal of manual editing.
PhotoScore shares some of the idiosyncrasies of Sibelius: It assumes to know what the user wants or is not smart enough to figure it out. For example, frequently in hymn material the leading measure is a fragment carried over from the last measure. Whereas Sibelius can be forced to accept this, PhotoScore does not want to be told what to do.
All in all, PhotoScore is most effective and dependable with scores that do not contain unusual details (grace notes is also a problem, for example).
